Why VLC Is More Than Just a Video Player
VLC Media Player by VideoLAN is one of the most downloaded pieces of software in history — and for good reason. It's completely free, open-source, runs on virtually every platform, and plays almost any media file without needing to install extra codecs. But most users only scratch the surface of what it can do.
This guide covers VLC's most useful and underused features so you can get maximum value out of a tool you probably already have installed.
Playing Any File Format
VLC supports an enormous range of audio and video formats out of the box: MKV, MP4, AVI, MOV, FLV, WMV, MP3, FLAC, AAC, OGG, and many more. You rarely need to install a separate codec pack when VLC is around. Simply open the file and it plays.
Converting Video and Audio Files
Few people know that VLC doubles as a media converter. Here's how:
- Go to Media → Convert/Save (or press
Ctrl+R) - Add your source file using the + Add button
- Click Convert/Save
- Choose your output format profile (MP4, MP3, OGG, etc.)
- Set a destination file name and click Start
It's not as fast as a dedicated converter, but it's perfectly capable for occasional use.
Fixing Audio/Video Sync Problems
If your video's audio is out of sync with the picture, VLC lets you fix this on the fly during playback:
- Press K to delay the audio (move it later)
- Press J to advance the audio (move it earlier)
- Each press shifts the sync by 50 milliseconds
Adjusting Subtitle Timing
Similarly, if subtitles are out of sync:
- Press H to delay subtitles
- Press G to advance subtitles
You can also set a global subtitle delay under Tools → Track Synchronization.
Streaming Media Over a Network
VLC can stream video from one computer to another on your local network. Go to Media → Stream, add your file, and follow the streaming wizard. You can stream to another VLC instance, a browser via HTTP, or even to a Chromecast.
Taking Screenshots and Recording
- Screenshot: Press
Shift+Sduring playback to save a frame as an image. - Record: Go to View → Advanced Controls to enable the record button in the playback toolbar. Press it to start/stop recording the current stream or file.
Looping a Specific Segment
To loop a section of a video (useful for studying or music practice):
- Enable View → Advanced Controls
- Use the Loop A-B button to mark your start and end points
- VLC will continuously loop that segment
Applying Audio and Video Filters
Under Tools → Effects and Filters, you'll find an equalizer, compressor, spatializer for audio, and brightness/contrast/saturation controls for video. These are real-time adjustments that don't permanently alter your files.
Increasing Playback Speed
Need to get through a long lecture faster? Press = (or the + key on the numpad) to increase playback speed incrementally. Press - to slow it down. The shortcut [ and ] can also be used for finer control.
Final Thoughts
VLC is one of those rare tools that's genuinely free, genuinely useful, and genuinely trustworthy. Download it only from the official VideoLAN website at videolan.org to avoid bundled adware from unofficial mirrors. Once you start exploring its features, you may never need another media tool again.
